The term "gite" in French covers several concepts.
Regulars at hiking shall immediately think of mountain buildings nearby hiking trails, what we call « gîtes d'étape » (lodges). Offering dormitories with a various capacity (12 to 50 people) and some double rooms, they provide their guests with simple blankets, a shared bathroom and sometimes a kitchen area in "free management". Walkers will find this rustic accommodation along hiking trails in Reunion, particularly in the cirque of Mafate (see our lists). The guardians of these lodges may offer some evening meals, which you should book in advance for an encounter with the local kindness in Reunion island.
